The two schools most Cabbagetown families use have been in the neighbourhood for well over a century. Winchester Junior and Senior Public School has been on its Prospect Street site since 1874. Jarvis Collegiate Institute is one of the oldest public secondary schools in Ontario, established in 1807.
Winchester is the main elementary school serving Cabbagetown. It's been at the corner of Rose and Prospect streets since 1874, with the current brick building dating from 1898. The school serves JK through Grade 8 and offers French Immersion from JK all the way to Grade 8 alongside the English stream.
The student population is one of the more diverse in the city, representing over 40 countries and languages. Winchester draws from Cabbagetown homeowners and St. James Town renters in roughly equal measure. The school is part of the TDSB's Model Schools for Inner Cities program, which provides additional resources for schools serving high-needs communities.

The current building on Jarvis Street dates from 1924, a Collegiate Gothic structure that's an architectural landmark in its own right.
Jarvis offers the Advanced Placement program at Grade 12 and pre-AP from Grades 9 through 11. The school carries a TDSB STEM-focus designation and has a large, diverse student body.

Winchester is the local option for French Immersion from JK to Grade 8, running alongside the English stream. Families in the Winchester catchment have the choice without attending a different school. Places in the JK French Immersion cohort are allocated in the spring before entry. If French Immersion is a priority, confirm the address falls within the Winchester catchment before making an offer.
